Rancho Obi-Wan serves to inspire through the preservation and cultivation of the Star Wars legacy.
Their purpose is to serve the world through the collection, conservation, exhibition and interpretation of Star Wars memorabilia and artifacts, using the collection to provide meaningful educational, aesthetic, intellectual and cultural experiences for a wide array of audiences and to carry out other charitable and educational activities associated with this goal.
Rancho Obi-Wan offers free tours to school groups with educational emphasis placed on a topic that the teacher requests. In addition, they donate tours to other registered charities to assist in their fundraising efforts. These organizations support children and adults with developmental disabilities, education and schools, food banks, therapy and play centers, medical research, the arts, and other community services.
Rancho Obi-Wan is a small, independent museum housing the world’s largest Star Wars memorabilia collection. It has been amassed since 1976 by super-collector, author, and fan-ambassador Steve Sansweet. They are located in rural Sonoma county just outside Petaluma, California.
Rancho Obi-Wan was originally founded in 1998 after Steve moved from Los Angeles to become Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations at Lucasfilm. Starting in 1999, Sansweet played an integral role in the launching of Star Wars Celebrations, the official fan conventions that attract tens of thousands of enthusiasts from around the globe. Steve officially left Lucasfilm in April, 2011, but still freelances as their Fan Relations Adviser.
In October, 2011, Rancho Obi-Wan, Inc., was established as a California not-for-profit public benefit corporation to manage the collection. As a publicly supported, federally recognized charity, Rancho Obi-Wan’s mission is to inspire! Star Wars has transformed their own lives. They hope to further inspire others by giving guided tours of the private collection in Petaluma, traveling to conventions with carefully curated displays, supporting other organizations in their charitable efforts, and reaching out to children and adults of all ages.
